Freegate is Working in Iran!
Didn’t see this one coming.. but.. for some reason it looks like Freegate — popular amongst Chinese users seeking to get around the Great Firewall. What’s even better is that multiple ground reports from Iran tell me it’s even fast!
With Freegate’s tiny size of 400k, people can pass this around on tiny thumb drives or grab it from one of many mirrors I’m sure will be quickly setup.
I was given this Freegate setup as one that works in Iran as of *right now*, yay for good news, now lets get this out!

So does this mean that we don’t need any more open proxies? I was thinking of setting one up, but it seems Freegate provides the solution right there.

Btw I suggest to provide this as ZIP not RAR as not everyone has WinRAR installed (so creating an extra hurdle now Iranians have to find WinRAR on their crippled internet!), and Windows natively supports ZIP.

It is a relay proxy client, and it has the advantage of changing the IP of the server it is using every so many seconds. This (apparently) makes it very hard to block. I guess the DIT is not using contiguous IP ranges that can be easily entered into IPtables. As you will read in the article, the Chinese are being forced by it’s success to mandate the installation of software to defeat it on every new PC sold in China. Now that is one heck of an endorsement.
Would this client be better to install that using one of the relay servers that Austin has provided? Depends on whether it can be run in such a way as to leave no trace on the PC where it is used. It requires no installation, so that sounds good. Does it leave a traceable fingerprint in the registry, temp folders, etc.? Don’t know– probably not. Probably have to reboot to erase it, though.

The version of Freegate you’ve posted seems to provide only limited service. Redirecting you to DIT Inc. website informing users out of China to pay for circumvention (as of Jan 2009).
